Dennis and Lois Doc

Dennis and Lois, immortalised in song by the Happy Mondays and spoken of affectionately by the likes of Noel Gallagher, Mark E. Smith and John Lydon are New York's most celebrated music fans. Having met at a Ramones gig in 1976 at the legendary CBGBs they have been to, on average 3 gigs a week together, and trekked across all 51 states and further afield not only with the Ramones, but also the likes of Doves, Badly Drawn Boy, The Vaccines and New York contemporary cult rockers A Place to Bury Strangers. Fuelled by a passion for live performance and also a mutual respect and affection for the performers themselves, Dennis and Lois have become ingrained into music history.

Our film will cut a path through four decades of stories, drawing on their self-described 'circle of friends' to create an expanded narrative piece, weaving musical performance, animated segways and archive material alongside filmic documentary content of Dennis and Lois.

The pace of the piece will be reminiscent of Richard Linklater’s Slacker, following threads through the characters we encounter and building a chain of events throughout the film. In the first instance this will be through the merchandise, paraphernalia and collected correspondence within their house - a lived in museum of popular culture - and secondly through a short road trip taking in key places and characters along the way.

Soup have filmed at key intervals over the past decade with Dennis and Lois, having met them during tours with Doves and Elbow. The proposed starting point to pick up filming with them is December 2012 when Happy Mondays play two nights at London's Roundhouse.
